Year after year, many of us set goals and visions for the year to come but for whatever reason, we don’t achieve them. This year I strive for change. Chris Brogan mentions that he creates goals for himself by only choosing a few, powerful words.

Here is a link to his three words article for 2010. If you want to learn how to choose the words that will keep you focused and motivated throughout the year, this is where you start:

“The words I use have larger meaning than the word itself. If I put the word “focus” down, it would be more of a reminder of an action, and not exactly a lighthouse upon which to set my goals.”

My Goals for 2010

These are my three words for 2010:

Patience. Persistence. Prayer.

These three words are relatively broad and the reason I chose these words is because I’m striving for growth personally and professionally. Let me explain:

Patience – I have started a few smaller ventures that didn’t life off the ground due to the fact that I wasn’t patience. There are processes in business that take time for them to first, execute and second, reap their results. There are far too many of us seeking instant gratification. This need for instant gratification leads to the addiction of seeing results right away and that just doesn’t happen in the real world.

Persistence – Now say that I was patient about my prior ventures, for me to actually see the results that I wanted to see, it requires the persistence to do things for a longer time frame. I realize that patience and persistence overlap and I did it on purpose. My inability to keep executing long term will be a thing of the past!

Also, I have tried many systems, processes and action plans that “don’t work” (The fact that I have tried so many systems should hint to the lack of patience…). I bet more than half the systems/process I started work but didn’t work for me because the lack of ability to keep going. The plan is to maintain my desire, passion and drive towards my vision with persistence.

Prayer – This oriented to my personal growth as I have been blessed to be closer to god and look for support.

The most important thing about this exercise is that they have to have a meaning. For me, patience, persistence and prayer mean something for me and make me take action. I’m confident it will guide me successfully through 2010.

What about you?

I’m sure you have been reading and hearing your friends’ New Years resolutions. What are the three words that will guide you through 2010? I would love to hear what your words are and what they mean to you.

So, what are your three words?

  1. Great words! Persistence is key…and something that I've struggled with in the past myself.

Good luck in 2010 – let us know how you are doing with your words.

  2. I have struggled with it in the past too. It's very simple to get inspired and excited about a project/task but it requires persistence to get it done.

I will post a review of my goals as the year progresses. Thanks for the comment :)
